Dolphins sleep with one brain hemisphere in slow-wave sleep at a time, maintaining enough consciousness to breathe and watch for predators. In captivity, they enter a fully asleep state with automatic respiration. The Indus river dolphin has a different sleep method due to living in water with strong currents.
